"Nearer my God to Thee"

Arrived 20 Feb 2017
Love the family more than those homemade cookies! Wow got my package and since then I have been trying to ration my candy and treats. So far I’ve only gained a few pounds from starbursts and muddy buddies (socios sucios). Thanks also to everyone who said happy birthday!

Not a lot of time but here was my week.

Tuesday I rode a Margarita for the first time on our way to the Mao city- part of our zone.  We have been teaching a new family and one of the men is pretty smart. He really understands the stuff even when he asked us half jokingly if Haitians are also decedents of Adam and Eve. He committed to come to church and actually showed up even though it was stake conference in the other chapel. He said he had dreamed the night before that he assisted, and when he woke up he really set himself on coming. I really felt the spirit during the meeting, I was fasting to have help with a few things, and I hope he felt the spirit to.

Wednesday we had a Zone Conference, but it was a little one with just president to review the changes in the schedule and stuff. My companion and I, the sister leaders here and the assistants, sang and harmonized (impressive for 1 hour preparation) “Nearer my God to Thee” which is one of my favorites. We got Klondike bars as a treat and I got a picture with Sister Lynch and another Ogdenite.

Jesus is an older men we are teaching who is going to be baptized this week. A really kind and quiet guy who should have everything set for this Saturday. We are teaching a partial member family and the husband wants to be baptized. The obstacle now is that he isn’t married with the wife and she doesn’t want to be married because she doesn’t like the church because she feels like the church robbed away her youngest son to serve a mission in Santo Domingo. He is ready and comes to church, we are trying to "smooze her over" (Mom's lingo) but things are kind of stopped there.

Today we played baseball as a zone. I’m decent hitting and pitching but my catching isn’t that great and trapping a rolling ball is a lost cause. We also went around buying things for my companion since he goes home in 4 weeks, but we try not to bring that up to much.

I really have been thinking about revelation, partially after reading the talks the family sent me. I really liked Elder Oaks talk and Sherry Dews talk. I really think its something that we often forget about, how to ask and also how to receive revelation. I have been relying upon this, as I have to start making decisions for after the mission, university, work, goals, even how and when to fly home. I’m trying to ponder more about the things that I’m looking for. How often do we ask and then change to think about other things. I think we could all do better to simply sit down and think. It is such a blessing as well to have a patriarchal blessing and the power of prayer.

Love,
Elder A. Sheffield
